What should you bring in the delivery bag?
Checklist for you, your partner and your baby.
When packing your maternity bag, it's important to include essential items that can make the experience more bearable for you and your partner. Here is a list of common items that are recommended to include in your maternity bag:
For the woman giving birth, the following contents are recommended in the maternity bag:
- Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair tie/clip, soap (without perfume; stings less and can give a more natural smell that the baby recognizes), shampoo, deodorant and possibly makeup if you wish.
- Comfortable clothing: Preferably loose-fitting clothes and nightwear that are easy to breastfeed in, as well as comfortable panties and nursing bras.
- Extra underwear: Remember to bring enough underwear (it happens that some have to be thrown away after use)
- Nursing pads: These can be helpful if you plan to breastfeed.
- Birthing outfit: This can be a loose-fitting dress or a large t-shirt that you can feel comfortable in during labor.
- Slippers or warm socks: Your feet may get cold during labor.
For both you and your birth partner, this is recommended in your birth bag:
Snacks and drinks: Bring something light to eat and drink during labor. Energy bars, nuts, fruit, smoothies, or energy drinks can be good options.
- Camera, possibly mobile phone
- Books, music, or other entertainment: This can help you relax while you wait.
- Birth plan: If you have prepared a birth plan, bring a copy to share with the hospital staff.
Some people also think this might be useful:
- Nipple cream: To relieve sore nipples (e.g. Purelan )
- Hemorrhoid cream, (e.g. Alcos-Anal or Scheriproct)
- Large panties and pads: For after birth (e.g. Tena)
- Breastfeeding shield
- Cooling pads (soothing, for after birth, for example Fødebagen cooling pads)
- Massage oil: If you want to get a massage during labor.
- Cloths (some to put on the forehead, others to soften and possibly reduce tears underneath)
For the baby:
- Bodysuits or rompers: Bring several sets of baby clothes to change as needed.
- Car seat for newborn
- Socks and hat: Keep your baby warm after birth.
- Diapers: Bring some newborn diapers, but be aware that the hospital usually has them too.
- Wet wipes
- Wool blanket or blanket: To keep the baby warm during the transport home.
Some people also think this might be useful:
- Mittens (some people have long nails and scratch themselves)
- Buttock cream (e.g. Inotyol)
- Neutral oil
- Yellow cloth
- Beautiful (someone wants to use beautiful. Newborn size)
- Nail clippers
Be sure to check with your hospital's maternity department to see if they have any specific recommendations or requirements for your maternity bag. It may also be a good idea to pack your maternity bag a few weeks before your due date so you're ready at all times. Of course, some of the contents are difficult to keep for long, such as smoothies and favorite snacks.
